Guest speaker Jenny Gehman, associate pastor at James Street Mennonite Church and author of Little Life Words, preaches from Philippians 1:1-11, where Paul, writing from prison near the end of his life, drops his self-sufficiency and opens his heart in surprising vulnerability.
Drawing on Moses’ plea to Hobab to come along (Numbers 10:29-32) and Jesus sending out the seventy “armed with vulnerability” (Luke 10:1-9), she shows that the body of Christ can never say “I don’t need you” to one another. Naming our needs feels hard, but it is holy, even Jesus began relationships by asking: to borrow Peter’s boat, to receive a cup of water at the well.
Her challenge is the Hebrew word hineni, “here I am, and here for you”, and a call to partner with someone for the journey ahead.
