Michelle Landis continues the focus on prayer with the story of Elijah (1 Kings 17 through 19), a prophet who saw ravens feed him, a widow’s flour and oil never run out, and fire fall from heaven, yet fled in despair when events did not turn out as he expected. She follows Elijah from the drought and the altar contest to the mountain of God, where the Lord was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but came in a whisper. Naming the disappointment every praying person eventually faces, when what we expected God to do does not happen, she points to the God who comes near in a whisper, provides what we lack, and keeps a faithful remnant through the generations. She closes by inviting us to hold our disappointments before the Lord along with our victories and to trust him with what we do not understand.
